Before You Can Coach:
Before you can coach your team, please be advised that you are responsible to acquire the following 2 items:

LEVEL COACHES CERTIFICATION
The Coaches certification course is a mandatory requirement for any Head Coach in both HL and Competitive. It is a 2 day program usually held in September and October, costing $155. No coach is permitted behind the bench without having first completed this program, so it is advisable to book and attend a course as soon as possible, if you plan on coaching.

POLICE CHECK
Go to the police station to fill in a background check once you are awarded a team.

We are aware that this could take several weeks to process, so we ask that you to bring in your receipt from the police station to prove you have applied for your police check. Please bring this with you to your interview, if the actual police check verification paper does not come back in time.

When attending the police station, advise the officer that you are with the SSE Wild Minor Hockey Association and the procedure will only cost you $10.00. If there are any problems we suggest you direct your questions one of the committee members.

Please note the Police check form needs to be signed by either Keith Woods, Cathie Webb or Scott Doerr before you go to the Police Station, so contact one of them to arrange a time to get their signature, BEFORE you go.

Team Bank Accounts

  • Each season a new account must be opened.
  • The account must have dual signing authority. This means 2 people from the team must sign each cheque (usually the coach or manager and team treasurer)
  • The signing officers must not be related.
  • The account must be closed out at the end of the season and closing statements provided to the League Treasurer.
  • Parents are to receive any remaining balance, equally split, based on the number of players.
  • Statements also need to be sent to the League Treasurer as at December 31st.
All expenditures need to be approved by the Head Coach and verfied with recepits

Important Schedule Notice

ALL Schedules are subject to change & revision.

Use the posted schedules as guidelines, check Bladenet weekly, for updated information.

Can’t Use Your ‘Home’ Ice?
If you are playing away on your home night and you don't see that your usual home ice has been assigned to another team, you must trade it away....same goes for your practice nights.
Be sure to check with the Ice Convenor before trading your home slot away when you can't use it. The scheduler may have used that ice for another game, so to avoid a double bookings, send a quick note with: the date and time of the ‘home’ ice, you can't use The Ice Convenor will let you know which hours you can trade or still have left for practice

Ice Trades
A lot of you ‘cc' the Ice Convenor whan making ice trades...to keep things simple, the schedule will still show everyone in their regular slot even if they traded the time away, any changes will be done behinds the scenes. Please send the Ice Convenor a note with 48 hours notice when you can't get rid of your ice so we can try and avoid burning any ice

Schedule Conflicts
If your practice time conflicts with a game or tournament

  1. Your first avenue would be to try and negotiate a trade with another coach.
  2. If you are unable to work out a trade then you would return the ice time to the Ice Convenor at least 48 hours prior to the ice time.

If you hand ice back in, at some point during the year when your schedule allows, the Ice Conveor will offer you an additional practice time to make up for it.
  3. If you do not want to try and trade you can also return the ice immediately

The Ice Convenor cannot look at every team's individual schedule and move each week to a different slot.

Coaches told us they wanted a set practice time....the Ice Convenor has done that for about 90% of the teams but to make this happen, some of the onus is on the coaches to handle conflicts
We know there are many of you who will have conflicts so a trade should be possible.
Coaches will notice and mention the open slots on the weekly ice schedule schedule...unfortunately all the prime slots are currently open as we try and negotiate game changes. If the changes do not happen, we will offer the ice to coaches. At this point you can assume all prime spots are being held for makeup games...if you want to switch for one of the overflow hours we can do that
So please only send an email when you are returning ice....the Ice Convenor does not need to be informed there is a conflict (unless its for 2 games)

Thanks for your understanding in this matter

COACHES SEMINAR: "HOW TO TRAIN GOALIES"

Presented for ver 1000 participants, in 3 counrties, Puckstoppers is also offering to provide this very informative seminar for our coaches, at NO COST!

Date and Location TBA.

Click here for information on the seminar

Coaches are responsible for all SSE Wild Equipment loaned out at beginning of the year. Everything must be returned or the team will be responsible to pay for missing items!

  1. The association will be charging a $200.00 bond for the equipment that is loaned out to each Competitive coach throughout the season.

This will be refunded in full at the end of the season if all the jerseys and equipment are returned on time and in good condition.
  2. The association no longer rents goalie equipment to any player during the regular season or the summer.
  3. The association provides goalie equipment to the coaches of all House League Tyke and Novice teams. This equipment is to be rotated amongst the players on that team throughout the season.
  4. All pylons and pucks must be returned! Last year minimal pucks and pylons were returned.
  5. All sweaters need to be returned as a complete set. Last year we had some sets missing sweaters, which resulted in countless hours trying to retrieve these sweaters from individuals. Make sure they are all there – coaches are responsible.
  6. Coaches should not be holding equipment over the summer months. We need all items returned so that we can get a proper inventory count going into the next season. Our budget is very tight and we don’t want to increase registration fees unnecessarily.

If you have any questions please contact Cathy Stewart at sls@sympatico.ca

Please help keep this process smooth

Duties of the Team Treasurer

  • Open up a new account each season with dual signing authority. This means 2 people must sign each cheque.
  • The signing officers must not be related.
  • Statements must be sent out once a month to the members of the team until the account is closed. The account must be closed out at the end of the season.
  • Statements need to be sent to the SSE Treasurer as at December 31st and at the end of the season after the account has been closed.
  • All expenditures need to be approved by the Head Coach.
  • The team will pay the following fees to the SSE Wild association and are to be given to their convenor.  If these cheques are not received by the due date then practice ice will be forfeited until the cheques are received. There is a $30 fee for any NSF cheques.
    • Sponsorship/Team Bond cheque for $950.  This is due November 1st. This consists of $750 for team sponsorship and a $200 bond for the jerseys and coach’s fees.  If the jerseys are returned in good condition and on time at the end of the season and all coaching fees are paid then the $200 will be returned to the team. The discretion of how much is returned for the Jerseys is up to the equipment manager.
    • Forest City Upcharge fees of $275/child for seeded teams and $225/child for MD teams..  This will be in the form of one cheque from the team and is due November 1st.  When submitting this cheque please include a list of all players on the team. We will not accept cheques from individual players for these upcharge fees.

All cheques given to the Wild Association should be made out to        SSELHA.

Setting Up Banking

  • Each season a new account must be opened.
  • The account must have dual signing authority. This means 2 people from the team must sign each cheque (usually the coach or manager and team treasurer)
  • The signing officers must not be related.
  • The account must be closed out at the end of the season and closing statements provided to the League Treasurer.
  • Parents are to receive any remaining balance, equally split, based on the number of players.
  • Statements also need to be sent to the League Treasurer as at December 31st.
  • All expenditures need to be approved by the Head Coach and verfied with recepits

Each year work begins on the next season, at our Annual AGM meeting in April. The coach’s selection process begins in May and the coaches begin working on their season plans even before they are interviewed.

The coach is ultimately responsible for the entire operation of the team and makes the final decision on just about everything (not Trainers issues) When the season begins, coaches have to scramble to fill positions within their teams, to ensure things run smoothly throughout the season.

We have assembled a quick list of positions and job descriptions that (some) teams will utilize. Competitive teams are more likely to require the majority of these ‘positions’, but it is up the discretion of each coach how he/she would like to structure their team.

We strongly encourage parents to ‘step up’ and let the coach know ASAP, if you are interested in helping out. Most coaches will hold a pre season team meeting to go over their plans and ask for volunteers, but there is nothing wrong with letting them know before the meeting, however if you are in a ‘tryout situation’ it is not advisable to volunteer for a position until the team has been picked.

Don’t be shy, the more involved you are as a parent, the more enjoyable the season is for both you and your child. Some of our new coaches may not even be aware of all the positions they need to fill.

  • Assistant Coach – (Competitive will require Coaches Certification course, HL will require Speak Out) If you feel you are qualified, the Assistant Coach help run practices on the ice and helps run the bench during games, opens doors, keeps stats, takes over in the absence of the Head Coach, helps deal with players, etc. Most teams will have two Assistant Coaches
  • Trainer (Requires Certification) – You must be certified to hold this position and cannot be both a coach and a trainer. The Trainer is responsible for the safety of the players on and off the ice. You will attend to players when injured, go out onto the ice, make decisions on a course of action based on the severity of the injury, monitor injuries and be involved in deciding when players may return to the ice.
  • Team Treasurer – This person is responsible for handling the team’s funds and should have some experience with bookkeeping or accounting. Required to provide mandatory statements to the league at the end of the season and to parents on a monthly basis, pay bills as required, maintain accurate and open banking records, open and close team bank account and disperse any remaining funds among the parents at the end of the season. May also be asked to assist in budgeting and collecting payments from parents as required.

  • Parent Rep – The league mandates that each team have a Parent Rep in place. This person is responsible for disseminating information to the team from the league and coach. You will also act as the first level of communication for parents to the coach, particularly in conflict situations. You may be asked to sit in on parent coach meetings.

  • Team Manager – This person will usually be involved in the administration of the team: booking tournaments, hotels, game sheets, filing of paperwork, etc. Some coaches prefer to handle this themselves.

  • Goalie Coach - Having played goal does not qualify you to be a goalie coach, you must know the hows and why’s of playing the position and understand the intricacies of movement and the physical abilities of the goalies you work with.

  • Fundraising Committee – Teams that fundraise together usually have a lot of fun and help promote team unity. Get as many parents as possible involved and work on ways to raise money and build team spirit. Rake lawns, have a BBQ, sell something, collect bottles, the possibilities are endless.

Be sure to check with the league before starting a fundraiser, as the following are not permitted: Lotteries or games of chance, anything-involving alcohol.

  • Jersey Collectors – Responsible for bringing jerseys to the rink for all games, collecting them following the game, washing jerseys and being aware of maintenance issues. Many teams will ask for two volunteers; one for the home set and one for the away set or rotate responsibility through the team. The team often purchases laundry soap, but this is a ‘team decision’.

  • Statistician – Some coaches will want to keep player stats, usually those relating to team performance (shots on goal, hits, passes, etc.) are considered much more important than individual stats (goals, assists, etc.). Consider rotating this through the parents, it keeps them involved and close to the team.

League Fundraising

Fundraising is key to keeping our registration costs in line and with the minimal increases or none, if possible.

Each year SSE looks at different ways to raise money for your hockey organization.

Please help out any way you can during the year to help with the various activities.

Please watch the website during the season for various league fundraising activities and do your best to support these activities.

Remember. The various fundraisers throughout the year help keep YOUR registration costs down.
Please contact Lisa Doerr - VP Administration or the Fundraising Committee

Team Fundraising

Team fundraising can help pay for tournaments, additional ice, team events and more. It is also a reat way to promote team unity and bonding among both parents and players.

Many teams come up with some very unique ways to generate income and fundraise. Electing a parent fundraising committee can generate interest.

BE AWARE: SSE has some strict policies in place concerning fundraising:

Be sure to check with the league before starting a fundraiser, as the following are not permitted: Lotteries or games of chance, anything-involving alcohol. League jerseys may NOT be worn for fundraising activities.

We strongly suggest that consideration be given to the entire parent group when making a decision on having your team fundraise or not. While simply ‘writing a cheque to cover it’ may be an option for some, there will be others who simply are not in a position to ‘write a cheque’ and will need to fundraise to make their payments.

Be sure to consider this and understand that fundraising may be the only option for some, meaning if the team does not fundraise as a group, it may cause a severe hardship for others. Fundraising is also beneficial to the team in terms of bonding as a group.

Please contact Lisa Doerr - VP Administration or the Fundraising Committee if you have questions
